Snow College librarians offer customized instruction designed to support your course objectives and help students develop strong research skills. We can lead sessions focused on finding and evaluating information, introduce specific databases and tools, or guide students through effective research strategies. INTRODUCTION TO LIBRARY & RESEARCH SERVICES
- Tour of library including service points (i.e. circulation desk, computer lab, printing/scanning) and book stacks
- Explore library website and online resources that are relevant to course
INTRODUCTION TO ETHICAL USE OF AI IN INFORMATION RESEARCH
- Students are introduced to ChatGPT and Microsoft Co-Pilot
- Students practice using ChatGPT and Microsoft Co-Pilot to find information
- Students compare and evaluate the information produced by ChatGPT and Co-Pilot
- Students practice ethical use of AI by learning best practices for citing AI and using it as a research tool
INTRODUCTION TO FACT CHECKING
- Students learn the SIFT Method to identifying credible information online
- Students use the SIFT Method in an activity
LEARNING ABOUT SOURCES
- Students investigate a variety of source types and learn their differences and advantages
- Sources may be books, journals, newspapers, primary sources, social media, or others depending on course needs
CITATIONS and ETHICAL USE OF INFORMATION
- Students learn why we cite (give credit where it is due, citations as research resource)
- Identify the parts of the citation
- Practice creating citations
- Track down sources from a citation
- Introduction to Zotero citation management software
KEYWORD BRAINSTORMING
- Introduction to brainstorming and keyword formation
- Mind map worksheet activity
RESOURCE SEARCHING AND ASSESSING RESULTS
- Demonstration of databases relevant to course including: Search tips, Navigating database search results, Keeping track of research.
- Students learn how to assess search results and adjust search methods accordingly.
DECONSTRUCT A SCHOLARLY ARTICLE
- Students learn to identify scholarly articles and understand what research is peer reviewed
- Students learn how to find scholarly articles using library resources
- Students do an activity that deconstructs the parts of a scholarly article
ACTIVE LEARNING & RESEARCH
- Students conduct independent research in the Library Instruction Lab with a librarian on-hand to provide research help and assistance
GUIDED EXPLORATION OF COLLECTIONS
Students are guided in an exploration of specific library materials such as artists' books, rare books, local history and institutional archives
