Why cite

• In academic research, many sources of information, such as books, articles, videos and more. Using citations in your papers and presentations gives credit to the original authors.
• Not using citations to give credit to the original author is committing plagiarism -- a serious offense that could lead to failing grades and expulsion from college. See the Snow College Academic Honesty policy for more information.
• Citing sources also helps researchers build on previous research.

When to cite

• As a general rule, you should cite any time you use information in your paper that is not your own.  This includes paraphrasing or summarizing someone else's ideas, direct quotes, using data, images, video and other media that you did not create.
• Citing general knowledge or your own ideas is not necessary.

Database citation tools

Most of the Snow College library databases have a citation tool that automatically generates citations for you in MLA, APA, and other styles. When you are in a database and have located an article or a book you need to cite, look for a button labeled Cite or Citation. Be aware that citation generators can contain errors or missing information. Always proofread the citation for accuracy and edit, when necessary.
