Databases

To begin your search finding articles in the Snow College Libraries select one of the databases below. A database provides access to a variety of sources, such as scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles, electronic books, streaming video, newspapers and magazines.

  • Access to the library databases below is available to current Snow College students, faculty and staff.
  • Access to the databases is available on and off campus.
  • Use our free Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service when you cannot access the full-text of an article. Students, faculty and staff should never have to pay to access an article. We will get the article for you - for free!
  • For additional help using the databases, use our ask-a-librarian service or book an appointment with a librarian.
  • To find scholarly, peer-reviewed articles, use the peer-reviewed filter in the database you are using. Not all the articles in the databases are scholarly or peer-reviewed. However, most of the databases will filter and label peer-reviewed articles, making it easier to find and identify peer-reviewed articles.

How to Search for Articles in the Databases

Follow these guidelines to help you locate articles in databases:

Step 1: Know Your Information Need
  • Review your assignment and identify the types of information sources required for your assignment. Often in academic research you will be required to use peer-reviewed, scholarly articles. You might also be required to use magazine or news articles.
Step 2: Create A Search Strategy
  • Using your research question and the main ideas you are writing about, you can create a list of keywords to use to create a search statement.  For example, if your research question relates to bacterial infection in COPD, then, you could begin your search using bacterial infection and COPD in the search box.  You could also use other related keywords, such as treatment, diagnosis, prevention.
 Step 3: Begin Your Search
  • When you have your keywords ready, you can begin your search by entering keywords into the search box in a database. Keep in mind that as you search, your keywords might change based on what you find in your searching. For example, you might find an article that discusses airway glucose as it relates to bacterial infections in COPD patients. This could lead to new keywords, such as airway glucose, sputum glucose, etc.
